The Great Peacemaker

The Great Peacemaker

China achieves two historic diplomatic successes: in Palestine and Ukraine.

While the US is busy inviting war criminals like Netanyahu to the US Senate to give speeches filled with refuted lies, and Scholz ensures that German weapons can be fired hundreds of kilometers deep onto Russian territory, China’s diplomacy achieves two historic agreements — within a week.

China, whose foreign policy emphasizes sovereignty of other states and diplomacy in the forefront, received the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba last Thursday.

Beyond the bourgeois media coverage, China, since “firmly supporting Russia” in its “unlawful war against Ukraine” (World), according to President Zelensky; “there is a clear signal that China supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.”
Since the start of Russia’s offensive into eastern Ukraine (2022), Xi has refused to support Russia militarily in a concrete manner.
This decision naturally stems from China’s special position in the global market, as Chinese exports would suffer greatly under (continued) increased tariffs against Chinese goods.

In addition to deepening Russian-Chinese relations, recently highlighted by Putin’s visit to Beijing and the declaration of the “no limits” partnership between both states, China now also seeks to expand bilateral ties with Ukraine.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reaffirmed during a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart that China intends to further increase grain imports from Ukraine.
Moreover, China plans to continue (and expand) humanitarian aid to places like Mariupol to counteract the effects of extensive infrastructural destruction.

The first visit of a Ukrainian government representative to China since the start of the “special operation” has yielded more diplomatic progress than two years of Western weapon diplomacy.
Unlike the Western world, whose embargoes and sanctions have only minimally impacted the Russian economy, China, as Russia’s main trading partner, has the ability to de-facto push diplomacy forward.

Moscow’s ultimatum for ending the war remains at least “the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia.”
While Zelensky considers these demands “,” the negotiations between Ukraine and China in Guangzhou are making more diplomatic progress than since February 21, 2022.
Unlike the Western world, whose embargoes and sanctions have only minimally impacted the Russian economy, China, as Russia’s most important trade partner, has the de facto ability to push diplomacy forward.

Palestinian Unity

A few days earlier: “Fatah and Hamas have apparently reconciled” (Tagesschau).

In the guesthouse Diàoyútái Guóbīnguǎn in Beijing, Mahmoud Aloul (Deputy Chairman of Fatah) and Moussa Abu Marzouk (Deputy Head of the Politburo of Hamas) along with 14 other Palestinian organizations, including the Marxist-Leninist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), gathered.
Leading the way: the great peacemaker, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Yi.

And indeed, Fatah and Hamas, with the 14 other Palestinian organizations, signed the “Beijing Declaration” last Tuesday (July 23) in Beijing.
The content of the declaration includes the formation of a “national interim government for reconciliation” and preparations for elections in a united Palestinian state.

To reiterate: the rivals Hamas and Fatah have agreed to form a joint transitional government between the PLO and Hamas:

“The most important consensus of the dialogue was to achieve broad reconciliation and unity among all 14 groups (…) The highlight was an agreement on the administration of the Gaza Strip by a national transitional government.
China also presented its initiative for resolving the Gaza dilemma, which includes three steps, according to the spokesperson of the Ministry. These are the imminent realization of a comprehensive, long-term, and sustainable ceasefire, the administration of Gaza based on the principle “Palestinians govern Palestine,” and the promotion of Palestinian UN membership.”

Specifically, the three Chinese points for the future of Palestine, translated and summarized by us, are:

“1. Palestinian factions are committed to unite efforts to oppose Zionist aggression and end the conflict.
2. They welcome the International Court of Justice’s opinion that Israel’s presence and settlement policy are illegitimate.
3. Based on previous agreements, such as the Cairo National Reconciliation Agreement and the Algerian Declaration, they aim to form a transitional government and lift the blockade of Gaza. They call for establishing an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.”
